Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in green top tube (Heparin). Avoid gel-separator tubes. For specimen stability and testing site’s requirements, acceptable specimens can be drawn Sunday to Wednesday only. Ensure both sample and requisition are labelled properly. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label. Blood should be drawn just prior to the next dose (trough). If this is not possible, blood drawing should be done between 6 hours and 14 hours postdose for ARVs administered twice daily or between 12 hours and 26 hours postdose for ARVs administered once daily. Samples taken to measure efavirenz concentrations should be drawn greater than or equal to 10 hours postdose. If malabsorption is suspected, the sample should be drawn at the time expected for the maximum concentration (Tmax). Laboratory Staff Instructions: Enter collection time in the order entry comment section. Separate plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Store and send frozen. Sample Rejection Criteria:Gross hemolysis, Gross lipemia, unlabeled or samples of non sufficient quantity. Stability: Stable refrigerated for 48 hours, Frozen for more than 48 hours. Transportation: Send sample to core lab ASAP.
