Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect blood into blue top vacutainers which contain 3.2% buffered sodium citrate. NOTE: The ratio of blood to anticoagulant is 9 parts blood to 1 part anticoagulant, therefore the blue top vacutainer (citrate) must be filled AT LEAST ¾ in total volume. Must specify Heparin therapy. A Haematology consult is required for in-patient samples (except for patients in Hematology/Oncology ward). Please call Special Coagulation at ext 5123 or the Haematologist on call Blue Top (3.2% Sodium Citrate), Purple Top (EDTA), Light Yellow Top (Acid Citrate Dextrose) /Buffy coat are all accepted specimens Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label. Retention Times: Negatives samples are kept for 6 months, Positives samples are kept for 3 years Specimen StorageSamples are kept frozen at -20°C until testing is completed then at -80°C for long term storage.
