Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect urine in a container with 25 mL 6 mol/L (6N) HCl acid. It is important that the urine is refrigerated during the collection. Restrict caffeine, nicotine and alcohol 24hrs prior to collection. Discontinue Methyldopa (Aldomet) at least 5 days prior to collection. Other drugs usually do not interfere with this assay. State 24 h volume and collection date. Write your “start” and “end” date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition. Laboratory Staff Instructions: State 24 hour volume and collection date. A separate specimen is required if Metanephrines are ordered as well. Store and send frozen. Stability: stable for 1 month refrigerated at 2-8°C and longer frozen. Transportation: Send sample to SMH core lab as soon as possible. Sample Rejection Criteria: Unlabelled, NSQ or leaking specimen
